Everyone Entitled To Their Rights
NGO Coalition on Human Rights chairperson Virisila Buadromo said police may need to ensure counseling and support for their officers especially in light of the alleged beating of prisoner Joe Baleiloa upon his capture in Cunningham after escaping from prison.
Meanwhile, when asked by Fijivillage which parts of the Bill of Rights have been breached in the alleged severe beating of Baleiloa, Fiji Human Rights Commission Chairman Dr Shaista Shameem said according to their act, the appropriate procedure to follow is to wait for an inquiry report from the Ministry of Defense before making any comments.
When Fijivillage called Interim Minister for Defense Ratu Epeli Ganilau last night for an update on the investigation into the incident, he said he has not been briefed on the matter as yet as he had just returned from the Western Division and would look into the matter today.
Also last night, General Manager Colonial War Memorial Hospital Dr Eloni Tora confirmed Baleiloa was still in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
Police Director Operations Senior Superintendent of Police Waisea Tabakau had earlier confirmed that excessive force was used on Baleiloa because he resisted arrest and wanted to stab police officers with a kitchen knife.
