Ethical obligations are important, especially in the legal profession.
These are the words of Judge Gwen Phillips, who was Chief Guest at the Fiji Women’s Lawyers Association workshop today at the Tanoa Plaza and who gave lawyers a crash course on the expectations of the legal system.
Phillips advised young lawyers in attendance that ethics must prevail at all times and if lawyers do not stick to these, their reputations are at stake.
Meanwhile, Chief Magistrate Ajmal Khan, one of the speakers, also highlighted the greater need for preparation, research and brief and relevant submissions which helps the court to determine the issues quickly and at the same time accord natural justice to the parties concerned.
Another guest speaker, lawyer Devanesh Sharma told the lawyers that they must always get their facts right and have a lot of confidence especially when dealing with senior lawyers who tend to be forceful and intimidating.
