The Fiji Association in Auckland, New Zealand, will be running essay competitions in secondary schools in the country to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the loss of the ship named Syria.

The ship had Indians coming to Fiji to work in the plantations when it met with an accident in Naselai.

The essay competition has been supported by the New Zealand High Commission which will contact schools to convey the rules of the competition which closes on the 20th of next month.

Students will have to write on any aspect of the Syria incident and to apply its relevance to their own lives and to that of the national character and it will be judged by Dr Satendra Singh and Lady June Hillary.

Two overall winners will get $500 and a certificate.
