The travelling public must ensure that taxi drivers turn on their meters when they are using their services.

This is the advice from Land Transport Authority's Spokesperson Ratu Eroni Volavola following reports from Lautoka that taxi drivers are refusing to turn on their meters.

Lautoka resident Raman Dalessar said since last Thursday he has come across several taxis in the Lautoka city area that have just refused to turn on their meters.

Meanwhile, Volavola said people should report taxi driver who refuse to turn on their meters.

Meanwhile, the LTA carried out spot checks at the Suva bus stand last week and they managed to inspect all buses which resulted in the booking of 26 buses for traffic infringements while 50 buses were given defect notices.

LTA also found that the main reason drivers did not turn off their engines while parked at the bus stand was mainly due to engine problems.
