Energy supplies vital
These are the words of Permanent Secretary of Public Utilities Cama Tuiloma while opening Phase 3 of the Energy Saver Competition adding that energy affects our homes, schools and even our freedom of movement.
He said energy is the commodity we can least live without, and is the least talked about issue in our public domain including media outlets.
Tuiloma said our total fuel import bill had surpassed the one billion dollar mark in 2006 and statistics show similar results for this year.
He added taking into account that it makes up one third of our imports, crucial steps must be taken so that we can save money.
Tuiloma added with the current situation it is apparent that our circumstances is no longer confined, but rather has become an imminent threat to the security of our economy and livelihoods.
Officials from the Energy Department said fuel import figures show that in 2006, $1.2billion worth of fuel was brought in, as for 2007 it was $99.7 million, and $1.2billion again for 2008.
