The new wage order will definitely come into effect from next Thursday and employers are warned that if they do not comply, they will be taken to task.
Chairman of the Wages Councils Father Kevin Barr said it has always been a concern in the past that despite the wage regulations being implemented, employers continue to evade standing up to their obligations.
He said there are severe fines in place for those who breach the wage orders.
Labour Minister Filipe Bole through the Wages council confirmed yesterday that the new wage order will not be deferred any further and will come into force from next Thursday, July 1st.
Meanwhile, Fiji Retailers Association President Himmat Lodhia said workers may be laid off or working hours may be reduced with this new wage order.
However, Lodhia said they welcome the announcement.
An increase of 30 to 40c is proposed for the wholesale and retail industry which includes cashiers, clerks, salesmen, sewing machinists, store men, unskilled workers, watchmen and other workers.
