Eminent judges identified to sit in Supreme Court
Acting Chief Justice and Acting Chairman of the Judicial Services Commission Anthony Gates confirmed to Village News that while potential Judges have been identified, they hope that judges from a wider region will be considered in the next 12 months to provide the court with a variety of legal viewpoints from various jurisdictions.
He said while he cannot say when the Judges will be appointed by the President, he can confirm that there will be three sittings of the Supreme Court in 2008 and the first sitting is likely in February and confirmed dates will be revealed soon.
Court Officials confirm that there are a number of matters pending before the Supreme Court, which includes the appeal by the DPP and Justice Gates against the order for re-trial in the Ratu Inoke Takiveikata case.
Meanwhile, Justice Gates also confirmed that the names of the three Judges who are to preside over the case between ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama will be announced on the commencement of the trial next Tuesday.
