Ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase had stressed that the next elections should be held under the current electoral system as that is the only one recognized by the 1997 constitution.
Although the National Council for Building a Better Fiji members have said that the electoral system needs to be changed, Qarase said any changes can be done through the parliamentary process by an elected government.
Members of the National Council for Building a Better Fiji have suggested that Fiji's electoral rules need to be changed to ensure sustainable parliamentary democracy.
In a People's Charter Communiqué released by the National Council, it had been revealed that the council members have expressed their disappointment that particular recommendations the Reeves Commission had made on the constitution had not been accepted in 1997.
The National Council members say if these recommendations on changes on the electoral system would have been endorsed, it would have moved the country away from the race based politics that had divided the people of the country against themselves.
