There was a time when Chris Boyd thought only a New Zealand side could win this year's Super Rugby title.

It was actually as recent as last week.

But once the quarterfinal draw was finalised yesterday, the Hurricanes head coach had a change of heart.

Boyd’s still not that enthused about the Brumbies chances of seeing off the Highlanders on Friday night, but found it easier to make a case for the Sharks, Lions and Stormers.

The Hurricanes host the Sharks on Saturday, before the Lions and Crusaders meet in Johannesburg and the Chiefs meet the Stormers in Cape Town.

Boyd says there are eight good sides in the playoff and the Sharks gave the Hurricanes a towelling up in Durban, so they have  a bit to play for.

The Canes lost that match 32-15.

The Hurricanes have home advantage for as long as they remain in the Super Rugby title race.

With that comes favouritism and the TAB have quickly installed them as the short‑priced team to beat.

The Hurricanes play the wildcard Sharks at 7.35pm this Saturday.

The Brumbies will host the Highlanders at 8.05pm Friday, the Lions will host the Crusaders at 2.30am Sunday while the Stormers face the Chiefs at 5am.
