Effectiveness of NGO Coalition Questioned
Executive director Reverend Akuila Yabaki said they have not even been informed of when the Coalition will have its annual general meeting.
Chairperson of the NGO Coalition on Human Rights Virisila Buadromo did not wish to comment on the matter when contacted on the issue.
Meanwhile, the CCF said the NGOs working in the area of human rights need to first make existing mechanisms work efficiently before attempting to create a new human rights council.
Reverend Akuila Yabaki said the NGO Coalition on Human Rights has worked well for many years and was able to collectively articulate a stronger voice on human rights. However, he raised concern that the December 2006 events had affected the NGO Coalition on Human Rights.
He said if the NGO Coalition on Human Rights cannot be made to work, then there may be a good reason to believe that the creation of a new human rights council may end up being an exercise in futility.
Meanwhile, chairperson of the NGO Coalition of Human rights Virisila Buadromo said there is a need to have more human rights based NGOs in the country as the current Fiji Human Rights Commission (FHRC) is not doing its job well.
When contacted this morning FHRC chairperson Doctor Shaista Shameem said Buadromo should look at the FHRC's annual reports as she does not want to comment on Buadromo's statement.
