An earthquake struck south of Fiji early this morning.

Seismologists have confirmed that the earthquake which measured 5.9 on the Richter scale struck at around 3 o'clock this morning about 293 kilometers south-southwest of Nuku'alofa on Tonga.
 
No tsunami warning was issued as the quake was located at a depth of 44 kilometers, making it a shallow earthquake according to the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.

Meanwhile, 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck 90 kilometres north of Lautoka at about midday yesterday.

No tsunami alert was issued for that quake either.
