The Mineral Resources Department has confirmed that an earthquake occurred in Fiji this morning at around 4.14am.

Land and Mineral Resources Ministry Permanent Secretary, Lt. Col Neumi Leweni said the earthquake measured 5.8 on the Richter scale and was located at about 72.2km East of Taveuni.

The earthquake originated at a depth of 22km below the surface.

Tremors were felt in Taveuni, Savusavu and Labasa but no threat of possible tsunami was triggered.

However the US Geological Survey reports that the quake in the Fiji region just after 4am today measured 6.2 on the Richter scale.

Meanwhile, two strong quakes of magnitude 6.4 struck off Tonga this morning.

The quakes, which hit a minute apart around 5:15 am local time was centred about 640 km northwest of Tonga's second largest town Neiafu.

The quakes were at a depth of 33 km.
