An agreement has been signed between the European Union and Education Ministry which will now see EU providing two million dollars for rehabilitation of schools that were damaged by Hurricane Tomas.

Assessments by the Ministry and Fiji Education Sector Programme on damages done to the schools by Hurricane Tomas shows that approximately 90 schools have been severely damaged and assistance is needed for the schools to resume normally.

The money will be used to repair damages to the school buildings, equipment and supplies and an advance of one million dollars has been given to the Ministry to address the schools needs while another one million dollars will be used to carry out repairs on infrastructure and school equipments.

Meanwhile, Head of EU Delegation for the Pacific, Ambassador Wiepke Van Der Goot said they are hopeful to see schools reopen so that students education is not affected.
