The Council of the European Union has decided to put in place a framework for Europe, to continue to assist and encourage Fiji is fully restoring democratic principles, respect for human rights and the rule of law.

The Council met yesterday and decided that the EU will continue working and supporting Fiji and the Fiji authorities will be informed about the decision.

According to the Council, the EU will continue to monitor Fiji's situation closely with the Pacific Islands Forum, to see that Fiji fulfils its commitments for early elections and a return to democracy as agreed in April after consultations.

The Council said that Fiji has made progress on several but not all of its commitments and the EU is encouraging Fiji authorities to continue the efforts in implementing all agreed commitments, and it stands ready to lend its support for this purpose.
