While the European Union is concerned that Fiji's elections March 2009 may not happen, they are also pleased with the dialogue to be facilitated by Commonwealth Envoy, Sir Paul Reeves.

European Commissioner for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel, who released a report after extensive consultation with relevant stakeholders regarding Fiji's situation, said the dialogue is a positive development which offers the opportunity of finding a sustainable solution to Fiji's problems.

Michel adds that this political dialogue can give a solution to essential election related issues well before the end of the year.

He said the EU expects the Interim Government to meet commitments it has taken in the areas of the rule of law and respect for one's human rights, and to ensure elections not later than the end of February 2009.

Michel also adds the Interim Government meeting these commitments will allow the EU to deliver its assistance program.
