The European Union does not plan to suspend promised aid payments to Fiji after the interim government re-imposed the Public Emergency Regulations.

EU spokesman Amadeu Altafaj Tardio told AAP that a meeting of member states on Friday had determined that drastically cutting promised aid payments could hurt Fiji's citizens, but some of the decisions of the interim government could affect future aid payments.

Tardio said the EU was in the process of formulating its aid programs for the period from 2008 to 2013, and Fiji's actions may jeopardise its share of those payments and the EU is still seeking further clarifications.
