Drug unit applauds jail term for convict
Sheik Mohammed was arrested after police stopped a truck in Seaqaqa on 6th June last year and confiscated more than 4.83 kilogrammes of Marijuana leaves stuffed in two channels underneath the truck.
The channels were then welded. Mohammed told Police that he bought the drugs for $4000 from Suva and it was being transported to Labasa where it was supposed to be sold to the dealers.
Judge Justice Paul Madigan while sentencing him said that this in an offence of the utmost severity and that Mohammed admitted being part of a plan to transport a very large quantity of drugs from the drug fields of Viti Levu to Macuata.
He said these drugs would have been sold for profit, probably to the young people of this region and would in turn lead to violence and behaviour.
Officer-In-Charge Drugs, ASP Sakeo Ganivatu said the sentence should be a deterrent to all those who are still cultivating drugs.
