To date 50 lives have been lost to drowning compared to 25 last year.
In the latest incident a 6-year-old primary school student of Naviyago settlement Lautoka drowned yesterday morning while playing near a river.
According to Fiji Water Safety Council examination of the drowning statistics shows that river usage has always been a hotspot for these fatalities and that 36 percent of drowning occur in a river.
Fiji Water Safety Council said even though this is a cool season, the drowning death toll per month have still averaged 5 which is quite large when in the past in cooler months an average of 2 drowning cases have been reported.
