Drought in the Western Division has reduced cane production by 25 percent.
The Sugar Cane Growers Council Chairman, Jain Kumar said they had estimated crop production to be around 3.1 million tonnes but the dry spell has declined it to 2.7million tonnes.
He added that it has badly affected the farmers and with Growers Fund available they will be able to assist very few growers.
Kumar said they would also be requesting for Government for assistance because most farmers would not be able to harvest their crops due to financial hardships.
