Team Fiji has started on a winning note on the opening day of the Commonwealth Youth Games with a gold medal victory in the Men’s 56kg category in Weightlifting.

Manueli Tulo led Fiji to a dream start in Pune with a gold medal win in weightlifting beating the other 12 opponents from countries like Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Samoa, Russia, Pakistan, India and Canada.

The 18 year old had a total of 219kg in his golden lift with 97kg from snatch and 122kg from the clean and jerk.

India's Shiv Shankar Singh finished at second spot with silver and a lift of 216kg while Malaysia Ammeran Bin walked away with the bronze and a 215kg lift.

The gold medal win in weightlifting has seen Fiji in second spot in the overall medal tally after day 1 of the Pune Commonwealth Games.

With hosts India leading with 3 gold and 1 silver, Fiji is at second place with 1 gold while Canada at 3rd position with 2 silver.

Our Pacific neighbors Nauru are tied with Australia on 5th spot with a bronze.

The competition will continue tonight and Fiji will take part in Athletics and Badminton.
