The newly renovated state of the art Fijian parliament is ready for the opening ceremony on Monday and some of the donors say it is definitely the most modern parliament facility in the Pacific.

This is historic for the country as parliament moves to its original site at the Government Buildings in Suva.

Secretary General to Parliament Viniana Namosimalua said the parliamentarians will also be given all the necessary tools to ensure that they carry out their research during the parliament sittings.

This includes the allocation of Apple Ipads for each parliamentarian which has been donated by the Parliamentary Support Donors made up of the UNDP, the EU, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

Another important feature of the renovated parliament is that some of the flooring which was put in the late 1920s has been retained.

Namosimalua said this also preserves the building and its history.

Acting Head of Mission of the New Zealand High Commission Mark Ramsden said they are glad to assist Fiji by providing about $2 million to the UNDP to assist in the renovation of parliament and to provide training to parliamentary staff and MPs.

Deputy Head of Mission of the Australian High Commission Karinda D’aloisio said they are also happy to assist Fiji by providing about $1.5 million to UNDP.
