Some of his friends told him to forget about representing Fiji again but Apisai Domolailai kept on trying.
The 25 year old from Laselase village in Nadroga made his debut at the Gold Coast 7s in 2012 where the Vodafone Fiji 7s team also won the title.
Domolailai said some of his friends told him to quit while others encouraged him to keep trying.
Meanwhile, captain Osea Kolinisau believes they will have to maintain their discipline if they are to stand any chance of winning in Japan this weekend.
Fiji faces France this Saturday at 1pm in their first Japan 7s tournament match.
They will then play USA at 4:18pm and Samoa at 8:52pm.
