The Womens Minister has welcomed the Domestic Violence Decree and the changes made to the related laws saying that it was long overdue.
Dr Jiko Luveni said previously there were no defined laws for domestic violence and perpetrators were not dealt with seriously while the new decree will enable justice to the victims.
A change has also been made to the marriage act which will require compulsory counseling on domestic violence by the marriage officer to the couple who wish to be married, and a change to the Penal Code and Criminal procedure code to give wider sentencing discretion to Magistrates and Judges when sentencing for domestic violence.
Meanwhile Fiji Women's Crisis Centre Shamima Ali said the teaching of moral values and ethics starts from home at a very early age and every parent should see that their child is not deprived of these things.
Ali, said children should be taught gender equality from a very young age.
