Indo Fijians should not forget what their forefathers sacrificed during the Girmit times and follow the culture and tradition they left for them.

These are the words of the former principal of Khalsa College in Ba and a writer of many books about the indentured labour system Jogindra Singh Kawal.

Kawal said many mothers suffered a lot during the Girmit times, waking up at 4am and working in the cane fields until 6pm with their children wrapped and tied with a saree on their back, while the men were whipped, forced to work hard and not allowed to sit together and talk after a hard day’s work.

He said these sacrifices made by the Girmityas are the reason for the Indians now living a happy life.
