Do not forget your forefathers
These are the words of the former principal of Khalsa College in Ba and a writer of many books about the indentured labour system Jogindra Singh Kawal.
Kawal said many mothers suffered a lot during the Girmit times, waking up at 4am and working in the cane fields until 6pm with their children wrapped and tied with a saree on their back, while the men were whipped, forced to work hard and not allowed to sit together and talk after a hard day’s work.
He said these sacrifices made by the Girmityas are the reason for the Indians now living a happy life.
Meanwhile, the Nausori Girmit Committee is trying to complete a project in Nausori that could not go ahead due to lack of funding.
Chairman Vijendra Prakash said they are trying to build a first ever Girmit Museum to remember the Girmitiyas and those who died near Naselai, Nausori.
He added that they have now received approval from the government to collect funds for the project.
