Diwali originated as a festival for farmers
For many these days the true meaning and reason behind the Diwali festival remains a mystery.
However the festival of lights is marked by four days of celebration, which literally brightens people with its brilliance and dazzles all with its joy, with the celebration of life, its enjoyment and goodness.
The origin of Diwali can be traced back to ancient India, when it was probably an important harvest festival.
The National President of Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, Bhuwan Dutt said Diwali is a celebration mainly for farmers.
Meanwhile, there are various legends pointing to the origin of Diwali where some believe it to be the celebration of the marriage of the goddess of wealth Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu.
Diwali also commemorates the return of Lord Rama from his 14 year long exile, and in celebration the people in his home town light up the kingdom.
