The cane farmers in Olosara and in Cuvu have been advised to diversify to other agricultural products with the government offering to assist them in this exercise.
The plight of the Olosara cane growers is well known to the key industry stakeholders which has been due to the dispute that existed between FSC and the Sugar Cane Growers Council on the mode of transportation in 2009 and in addition to this is the complete destruction of the old Sigatoka bridge in January this year, which carried the rails.
The Prime Minister and Minister for Sugar Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama earlier higlighted during the Questions and Answers Session at the 2010 Budget Forum that the farmers will be given grants.
Government in a statement said the repairing of the old Sigatoka Bridge is out of the question as it is not economical to do so, adding spending $7 million to repair the bridge in order to transport $1.2 million worth of sugarcane does not make good commercial sense.
