All people and vehicles moving in and out of the areas declared a red zone in Wainivesi and Waimaro due to the outbreak of the cow disease Brucellosis will have to be disinfected before they are permitted to move out of the area.
Ministry of Primary Industries spokesperson Joe Uluilakeba said bio-officers will be stationed in the area from tomorrow.
Uluilakeba confirmed that random tests on farms around the country continue and at this stage Brucellosis has been found in 24 farms confined to the Tailevu North area.
Earlier today, Uluilakeba stressed that local beef is safe to eat.
Uluilakeba said they do have the services of a doctor who specializes in meat helping them with the inspection and vetting process before the meat goes into the market.
On meat from cattle that are slaughtered for traditional Fijian ceremonies, Uluilakeba said this is against the law.
Brucellosis cannot be passed from one human to another and its symptoms if contracted from cattle are similar to that of the H1N1 flu.
Archari also said people are able to contract the disease in a similar way to Leptospirosis and that is through open wounds.
