The people of Fiji can expect to have a new mobile service in the next four months, as the new mobile company Digicel was today given their license by the Interim Government.

Digicel collected its license and handed over the cheque for 10.25 million US dollars to the Interim Communications Minister Tom Rickets, who in return said that today marks the beginning of a liberalization process initiated by the Interim Government and this will end a long term monopoly on mobile telecommunications services in the country.

Rickets said that under the license agreement, Digicel will start operations formally from October 1st and they expect wider coverage and competition immediately. He said this is a significant investment in Fiji to build a world class network.
