The wait is finally over.
Digicel Fiji Limited has been given the license to provide mobile phone services in the country.
At a press conference this afternoon, Interim Minister Tom Ricketts announced a total four companies handed in tenders to provide mobile services, however, according to Rickets, Digicel met all the requirements and hence was given the license.
The four companies paid a total amount of two million non-refundable fees in tender.
The interim minister also revealed that there is a possibility that a third company may be given a license in future.
Speaking to Village News after the announcement, Digicel Fiji Limited Business Development Manager Thomas Underwood thanked the interim government for awarding them the license.
The three other companies that applied for licenses were Unwired Fiji Limited, Pacific Spectrum Holdings Limited and Telecom Pacific Limited.
Meanwhile, in a statement this afternoon, Vodafone Fiji congratulated Digicel and said it is a significant milestone in the development of the Fiji telecommunications sector.
Vodafone said it expects the competitive market will provide a range of exciting opportunities for both the consumer and suppliers of telecommunication services.
