The Mineral Resources Department is trying to improve on early warning systems on tsunamis if warnings are to be issued outside office hours.
Senior seismologist Lasarusa Vuetibau said the current arrangements is that the Nadi Weather Office which operates 24 hours, contacts them when such warnings come in odd hours.
He added they were informed about the tsunami warning soon after the earthquake and they alerted the media before DISMAC was contacted.
