The Chairman of the Fiji Media Council said the deportation of Fiji Times Publisher Rex Gardner is sending out a very negative message to foreign investors.
Daryl Tarte said not only is the deportation another blow to media freedom and independence, but also to the economy as future potential foreign investors will be thinking twice about investing in Fiji as foreign citizens will not be safe.
Tarte said the government should inform the people of Fiji as to the reasons behind Gardner's deportation.
However, Interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama has stressed that there is nothing personal about the deportation of Fiji Times Publisher, Rex Gardner.
Commodore Bainimarama said Gardner has not been ill-treated and people should know that he broke the law in Fiji.
He said Gardner committed an offence and pleaded guilty, and that is the reason for his deportation as he has breached his work permit condition.
