The mismanagement of Waste and industrial pollution are the current issues that the Department of Environment is addressing.
Senior Environmental officer Lusiana Ralogavau said this is usually evident in industrial zones as most businesses do not comply in getting approval with an environmental Impact assessment.
Under the Environment Management Act, facilities who conduct an unauthorized development without an approved Environmental Impact assessment is liable to a maximum fine of $750,000 or 10 years imprisonment.
Ralogavau added that some businesses do not properly comply with the proper management of waste disposals.
Also under the EMA act, any individual or business that discharges waste which causes pollution with detrimental effects to the environment is liable to a maximum fine of $250,000 or imprisonment of 3 years in jail.
Meanwhile, the Department of Environment will be launching the National Ozone week celebrations this Friday.
