The Commission of Inquiry into the Magistrates Court has revealed that there are delays in judgments and rulings by Magistrates.

Retired judge Justice John Connors who was appointed to enquire into the Magistrates Courts in Fiji found that in Labasa a judgment had been pending for the last three years.

The Commission of Inquiry revealed that a Magistrate has some 20 judgments outstanding in Labasa, and that the Magistrate is no longer serving in Labasa.

Another example Justice Connors highlighted that a complaint was made to the Commission with respect to the civil judgments outstanding in Ba, where a Magistrate had failed to deliver judgments which were pending for two years. In another incident a Magistrate has 41 judgments outstanding from a previous Court that the Magistrate was sitting in. These decisions have been pending now for 3-4 years.
