Consumers can expect a new decree to be enforced soon which would limit, control and reduce the use of certain types of plastic bags and also ban the use of specific plastic bags in Fiji.
Acting Director Environment Joape Davetanivalu revealed to Fijivillage news that consultants are currently carrying out a study on the use of plastic bags and by the end of the month policy decisions will be taken up to cabinet to enforce laws on the use of certain types of plastic bags.
Meanwhile, Fijivillage news has noticed that many major supermarket outlets in the country are now using plastic bags which state that is degradable.
Davetanivalu said they have tested these plastic bags and they do degrade at a faster rate than normal plastics. He has applauded the initiative taken by the supermarket outlets and said others should follow suit.
