Sending ex-prisoners back to their villages to engage in activities to improve their livelihood has been highlighted as one of the reasons why there has been a decrease in the number of inmates from the Lau province in our prisons.
This was highlighted to the members of the Lau Provincial Council by the Commissioner Eastern Ifiremi Vasu.
Our reporter Selina Navuso, who is in Deuba, has the details.
Earlier today, Colonel Vasu also highlighted that rural to urban drift is a major issue of concern for the 22 island in the Lau group.
He revealed that one of the major reasons for the migration is due to the lack of space for expansion to carter for the increase in population.
It was also highlighted students travelling to the main land for education are often accompanied by their parents who are the back bone of manpower in the villages.
Colonel Vasu said if the trend is not stopped, there would be only 5000 people remaining on the islands in Lau within the next 10 years.
The meeting continues this afternoon.
