The Fiji National Provident Fund said that the country's political events of late 2006 have hampered the collection of contributions last year.

The FNPF Manager Employers Division, Irene Singh said from February last year, contributions dropped as a result of the political and economic climate, as many employers closed their businesses, public servants received a 5% pay cut and there was a slump in the tourism industry.

However, Singh said in the FNPF's recent newsletter, that despite the downturn, last year's contribution collection saw an increase from $267.66 million compared to 2006. The Fund collected $289.83 million and Singh said this is due to the enforcement of the necessary regulations and the prosecution of Employers.

Meanwhile, benefit payments paid to members last year totaled $281.93 million compared to $250.62 million in 2006, which also included Special Death Benefits and Pension Payouts.
