Deadly Swine flu virus a concern
Stakeholders in the Health sector say the spread of the deadly swine flu virus has spread through travelers in most countries including New Zealand.
World Health Organization (WHO) Medical Officer Jacob Kool added it will take some time to detect if swine flu is in Fiji.
Meanwhile, Health Permanent Secretary Dr Sala Saketa said a laboratory has been set up to test the swine virus.
She added that Fiji has some supply of anti virals however it will be too early to say if this will be enough to counter a large spread of the virus.
The flu which started from pigs has killed 149 people worldwide and has infected more than a thousand others.
Cases have also been confirmed in Canada and the United States.
The swine flu virus can be spread through direct contact, shaking hands, kissing and even sneezing in front of someone.
The Health Ministry has also confirmed that the flu will not be spread from eating pork or having contact with pigs.
The symptoms of swine flu in people include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.
To prevent the flu from spreading, wash your hands, get plenty sleep, manage your stress, eat nutritious food and avoid contact with sick.
