Day two starts with upset
We join Vijay Narayan with this report.
The first gold medal of day two of the Coca-Cola games went to Wainimakutu Secondary School after Melaia Bola beat the odds stacked against her to win the 3000 meters open girl’s finals.
Bola beat the likes of defending champion Sereima Liku of Nadarivatu, Akesa Drotini of ACS and Mereseini Naidau of Nadarivatu who were all favourites to win the event.
Suva Grammar School's Mataiasi Savou has been crowned the Blue ribbon champion last night as he took out the Senior boy's 100 meters final title in the last hour after Marist brothers high schools star runner, Banuve Tabakaucoro was disqualified for two false starts.
This is how our commentators Ravi Sharma and Mika Kaloucava described the race.
National 100 meters champion and Savou's trainer, Jone Delai said to win the Blue Ribbon event had been part of their plan, as he was too glad they achieved their aim.
The nerves and the tension took its toll as Laisiasa Tuisawau of QVS was also disqualified for the third break starts.
Savou finished the race with a time of 10.78 seconds while the old record stands at 10.74 seconds and Delai said that he set an aim three years ago, and is achieving the rewards.
