The Dairy farms in Wainivesi and Waimaro which have been confirmed to have cattle infected with Brucellosis may have to remain under quarantine for up to three years as the Quarantine Department tries to eradicate the disease from the area.
Principle Vet Officer Dr. Robin Achari confirmed that these farms will not be permitted to sell raw milk directly to customers until the disease is completely removed.
These farms would be permitted to supply raw milk to Rewa Dairy for treatment but will not be allowed to sell directly to the public.
Dr. Achari also confirmed that of the 2750 cattle tested, 244 have been confirmed with Brucellosis. He stresses that the meat from the contaminated cattle is safe for consumption as Brucellosis is only spread through raw milk.
He say they are now trying to sell the cattle however they are finding difficulty in getting rid of such a large number of cattle.
Dr. Achari confirmed that so far the disease has been contained within the Wainivesi and Waimaro area and there are no cases of human infection at this stage.
