DVD outlets take steps to remain in business
As the amendment to the Copyright Act comes into effect today, the manager for Comsol outlets and president of the Fiji Islands Sound and Vision Entertainment Association Shavnil Gosai said their membership of 120 video libraries are now directly dealing with the distributers in India and Australia.
Gosai said he has told the association members to follow the law from today and remove the pirated DVDs and CDs from their shelves.
He said they had asked for more time to get all agreements set with the distributers overseas but they were told that enough time has been given and the new law is in place from today.
Gosai said the issue now is who the current licenced distributers are.
He also said they fully support the local artists and will start on a new initiative from this month.
The director of Damodar Brothers said anyone thinking of recording a movie in the cinemas should think twice as they have trained staff to see that it does not happen.
Div Damodhar said movie downloads at cinemas are not happening all the time however it is more to do with other sources.
He said anyone found recording in cinemas will be dealt with.
The question now is about effective policing as the law is already in place.
When Fijivillage contacted Police Director Operations Waisea Tabakau earlier today, he said he will have to see the amendment to the Copyright Act and whether it comes into effect today.
Tabakau said if anyone has any issues about the Copyright Act, they should go and see him or visit any of the police stations.
He said there is no plan at this stage and everyone should understand that they are now people focused not crime focused.
He refused to make any further comments as he said anyone complaining about the breaches of the Copyright Act should visit them.
