Cyclone Effects to be Felt Later Today
Director Rajendra Prasad said Tropical Cyclone Funa is passing over Santo, in Vanuatu and at 9 o'clock this morning it was located at about 1,160 kilometers West North West of Nadi. He said the cyclone is moving East South East at 15 knots and at present poses no direct threat to Fiji however it will bring widespread rainfall.
Tropical Cyclone Funa is expected to curve East and then South East in the next 24 hours. Funa is a category 2 Tropical cyclone with damaging gale force winds of 95 km/h and momentary gusts to 130 km/h close to its centre but should intensify into a Hurricane, attaining destructive storm force winds within 12 to 18 hours.
Meanwhile, a strong wind warning remains in force for Southern and Western parts of the country including Southwestern Vitilevu, Kadavu, Vatulele, Beqa and nearby small islands from tomorrow.
A flash flood warning is also in force for the low lying areas of Viti Levu as the trough of low pressure is still over the group and is expected to bring continuous heavy rain.
