Cut off mark allowed only for rural schools
In light of class eight students receiving their FEYE results today and now contemplating which secondary school to enroll in, Fijivillage consulted the Education Ministry on whether schools are allowed to set off cut off marks and only take on students which meet their passing requirements.
However, the Education Ministry has confirmed cut off marks can only be set by rural schools.
The Ministry clarifies that for rural schools, such as QVS or ACS, they will be allowed to set cut off marks, to cater for those coming from outer islands that want to attend their school and are not within the 2km zone.
The Ministry said urban schools are not permitted to set these marks, as they will have to accept all students living within 2km of their location.
The zoning system is set to begin next year for Class 1 to Form 3 students where they are expected to attend the school located within a 2km radius of their homes.
