The alert level and security measures at the Kings Wharf in Suva was heightened yesterday afternoon due to the sensitive nature of the cargo onboard a vessel which called into port causing confusion amongst the public who tried to access the wharf.
However, Director Customs Jalal Ud-Dean confirmed that normal security procedures were initiated as the vessel Captain Wallis brought in dynamite and explosive for a quarry company.
He stressed that there is an international requirement to heighten security when handling explosives and members of the public should not be alarmed when their alert level is increased and security is stepped up.
