Former Maori All Black lock Hayden Triggs has been called into the Blues squad to replace Culum Retallick.

Retallick ruptured knee ligaments in December and had surgery last month which will keep him off the field for six months at least.

31-year-old Triggs, who has previously played for the Hurricanes, Highlanders and Chiefs, is currently in Japan with the Honda Heat and will join the Blues in the next few weeks when his season there finishes.

The Blues will play the Highlanders in their super rugby opener on the 22nd of this month.

Meanwhile, the super rugby season starts next Sunday where the Cheetahs play the Lions and the Sharks meet the Bulls.
