The Crusaders remain second in the New Zealand Conference but it has come courtesy of one of their ugliest wins in recent memory.

They defeated the Waratahs 23-22 in Christchurch, after replacement first five Berrick Barnes missed a penalty with time up on the clock for the visitors.

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder said the first half was unacceptable.

He said he has never seen their side miss so many tackles in one half and they just were not connected.

Waratahs coach Michael Cheika is absolutely furious with the officials and said it is the second week in a row where he will go to referees boss Lyndon Bray.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes have fallen 30-23 to the Brumbies in Canberra to remain in fourth place in the New Zealand Conference.

A see-saw encounter at Canberra Stadium saw the Brumbies run out winners over the Hurricanes ast night.

The Brumbies enjoyed the majority of territory throughout but were unable to put the Hurricanes away, setting up a tight finish.

Wallaby contender Christian Lealiifano was impressive with the boot - kicking 20 points including six penalties.

In the matches tonight, the Highlanders will play the Blues at 7.35 and the Rebels will face the Reds at 9.40.
