Former All Blacks captain Reuben Thorn has been called into the Crusaders squad for their tour of South Africa.

Thorne who is the most capped player in Crusaders history, last played for the side in the 2008 final win over the Waratahs.

With Brad Thorn out injured and Kieran Read being rested coach Todd Blackadder called in Thorn to cover loose forward and lock positions.

Also on the injured list is halfback Andy Ellis who dislocated and fractured his right thumb and will be out for six to eight weeks.

The Crusaders play the Western Force in Perth at 12:05am on Sunday.
