The Criminal Justice Council met for the first time today, with core members present like the Acting Chief Justice, Anthony Gates, the Police Commissioner, Commodore Esala Teleni, the Commissioner Prisons, Brigadier Iowane Naivalurua and Director Public Prosecutions, Josaia Naigulevu and the Deputy Commissioner FICAC amongst other members.
Interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum stated that the Council was appointed by Cabinet to look into issues of concern in the Justice System namely the prison system.
Sayed-Khaiyum added that the Council would make recommendations regarding these areas of concern, whereby these recommendations would then be forwarded to him to look into or depending on the seriousness or magnitude of the recommendations, it could then be taken to Cabinet to decide on.
The Interim Attorney General adds that the end objective of the Council is to ensure that there is an effective Criminal Justice System in place.
