An upgrade from coupons to cards in the Free Bus fare Assistance Scheme is expected to take place in the second term of the school year.
This has been confirmed by Permanent Secretary Prime Minister's Office Pio Tikoduadua who said they are now looking at a card swiping system to replace the coupons currently being handled by students on school buses to and from school.
He said this would be easier and more efficient however he does not reveal how much this would cost.
The Fiji Bus Operators Association is expected to comment later.
The Education Ministry has confirmed that 574 schools around the country have joined Student Transport Assistance Scheme whose students are eligible for the scheme.
Ministry said a few more schools are expected to be part of this scheme as submissions are still being received from schools and some parents.
