The Wages Council is hopeful that the government will stick to its earlier decision on the implementation of new wage rate for nine industries on the first of July.
Council Chairman Father Kevin Barr said it is prime time that the poorest of the poor get some relief as times have become worse from bad.
Father Barr added close to 60% of people in Fiji fall in this category who urgently need a pay rise.
The new wage regulation initially had to come into effect on the 1st of February but taking the global financial crisis into consideration, the government deferred the implementation to the 1st of next month.
The nine industries which are proposed to get a wage increase include the garment, hotel and catering, manufacturing, printing, security, building, civil, electrical engineering, road transport, wholesale and retail and saw milling industry.
