The Constitutional Offices Commission has decided that Dr Maurice Coughlan will not be permitted to continue as the Supervisor of Elections.
Speaking on behalf of the Constitutional Offices Commission after the three ccmmissioners met this morning, lawyer Gavin O'Driscoll said they were in the process of informing Dr Coughlan of the decision based on the non-disclosure of his disbarment in 1992.
O'Driscoll also confirmed that the second candidate shortlisted will now be approached to take up the post of Supervisor of Elections. He stressed that they would not repeat their mistake and would conduct a thorough background check.
It was also confirmed that Dr Coughlan informed the members of the Constitutional Offices Commission that he did not wish to go as far as the reasons behind his not revealing that he was disbarred during the interview.
